The Smartphone is Absent

Concluding our Perspectives series is conceptual artist Esmeralda Kosmatopoulos, who asks big questions about being human in a time of omnipresent technology. In the work she's presenting at the 2016 Pulse Contemporary Art Fair, she tells us how, in showing everyday actions with a twist, she's not necessarily criticizing technology, but challenging the viewer to re-examine what we may take for granted in our constant transcendence of physical frontiers. In looking closely at the intimate nature of our technological interactions, she turns the idea of "here" on its head in totally unexpected ways.

Why Good Leaders Make You Feel Safe

What makes a great leader? Management theorist Simon Sinek suggests, it's someone who makes their employees feel secure, who draws staffers into a circle of trust. But creating trust and safety — especially in an uneven economy — means taking on big responsibility.

TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). We often think of the ocean as a quiet, peaceful place, filled with animals that don't make much noise. So when I went diving in the ocean for the first time, I was surprised at how rich the soundscape around me was: you could hear fish nibbling on coral and squid swimming past you. But more than anything, you could almost always hear the hum of a boat engine. It's part of a big problem in the ocean right now.
